Ready to step into your glow-up solo travel era?
1. The Netherlands
Call me biased, but I must talk about my beautiful country, the Netherlands. Travelling the world made me realise the beautiful, unique things we have in the Netherlands that we Dutch take for granted.
The Netherlands is an ideal destination for solo female travellers! The country is small but big at the same time. Amsterdam is not the only city in the country to explore, and you’ll be surprised at how much more there is to see!
The Dutch people are friendly, helpful, and direct. If that’s your vibe, the Netherlands will make you feel at home. The Netherlands has great public transport, making navigating in and between cities easy. Or, do what the Dutch do and hire a bike to explore!
With its famous canals, museums, farmer markets, cafes, and patios, Amsterdam is a unique experience if you’re not from Europe! But don’t forget to explore more, like Utrecht, Den Haag and Rotterdam.
The Dutch are known for our proficiency in English (not everyone is fluent, though), which reduces language barriers and makes travelling easier. I highly recommend visiting the Netherlands between April and October but outside peak season in July and August.
The weather will always be unpredictable, so keep your fingers crossed for dry weather. If you want to see the tulip field, visit mid-March and come in the summer to grab a festival!

2. Poland
I fell in love with Poland! When I first visited in 2015, I didn’t know what to expect, but Poland blew me away. The locals are friendly, the cities are beautiful, the food is delicious, and everything is affordable.
Getting around is a breeze with excellent public transport options like buses, trams, and trains connecting cities and towns. Plus, Uber is easy to use and cheap!
Warsaw, the capital, is a lively mix of modern and historic sights. You can wander through the stunning Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and dive into the vibrant nightlife.
Krakow is another must-see city known for its breathtaking architecture and rich history. Highlights include the majestic Wawel Castle and the bustling Main Market Square.
Gdansk, a charming coastal city, has its unique appeal. With its colourful buildings and rich maritime history, you’ll love strolling along the scenic waterfront and checking out the impressive Gdansk Crane.
Poland is perfect for female solo travellers on a budget. Accommodation, food, and activities are all affordable. The country is steeped in history, especially from World War II, and you can learn so much at museums and landmarks like the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.
3. Greece
We all know those iconic photos of Greece—the stunning beaches and the charming white houses on Santorini and Mykonos. You won’t find a sight like this anywhere else in the world!
That’s why Greece is a must-visit for your European summer adventure! With so many islands, it’s impossible to see them all, but the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea is a great starting point for first-timers.
Fly into Athens, then hop over to Fira, Santorini. From there, you can explore nearby islands like Ios, Paros, Naxos, and Mykonos by ferry.
Greece can be affordable but be prepared to splurge on famous islands like Santorini and Mykonos.
There’s so much to do in Greece, from sightseeing and boat tours to cooking classes. Whether you want to relax on the beach, hike, or party until sunrise, Greece has something for everyone.
It’s all up to you!
4. Portugal
Portugal is still an underrated gem for overseas visitors coming to Europe. Would you consider Portugal one of the best solo travel destinations in Europe? While it has so much to offer and is quite affordable, most crowds tend to head towards Spain, Italy, and France.
But Portugal is a fantastic country for solo travellers! You could easily craft an entire trip travelling from north to south. The country boasts beautiful countryside, better beaches than Spain, vibrant cities to explore, and amazing cuisine.
Start your trip in Porto, make your way to Lisbon, and then wrap it up in the lovely Algarve for a few days of sun and sea! Don’t miss out on nearby gems like Cascais and Sintra.
The local cuisine is a treat, emphasising seafood, grilled fish, and roasted chicken. Portugal’s wines are both delicious and cheap. Do a port tasting in Porto and try Lisbon’s famous ‘pastel de nata’.
When visiting Lisbon, be prepared to walk a lot! The city is built on hills, so many streets are pretty steep. Think of it as the San Francisco of Europe, but much more affordable!

5. Sweden
Sweden, part of Scandinavia, is a fantastic destination in Europe! The weather is pleasantly mild in summer but cold in winter. Perfect for exploring. While countries like Sweden, Norway, and Denmark are often overlooked, they have much to offer.
Beyond Stockholm, Sweden’s capital, boasts great cities like Gothenburg. The natural landscapes are stunning, with beautiful lakes perfect for relaxation.
The Swedish speak excellent English, so there’s no need to worry about a language barrier. The country is young, hip, and modern.
Remember that you’ll need a bigger budget for Sweden than other destinations. Its costs are similar to the Netherlands. Sweden is a safe country and very welcoming to solo female travellers from all backgrounds.
