The best tours to see Mount Fuji! When you’re planning a trip to Tokyo, a trip to see the famous Mount Fuji (or, as locals like to call it, Fuji-san) is a must! The area around Mount Fuji, like Lake Kawaguchi, has some great spots to get some iconic shots of Mount Fuji in the background!
In this post, I will introduce everything you need to know about visiting Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi. There are many tours out there, but which one should you choose? Mount Fuji can be easily reached on a day trip from Tokyo, but it might be worth it to stay in the area overnight!
The best tours to Mount Fuji overview
Mt.Fuji Area, Oshino Hakkai & Kawaguchi Lake
Mt. Fuji 5th Station & Lake Kawaguchi
Hakone & lake Ashi
How far is Mount Fuji from Tokyo?
Mount Fuji, or the area around Mount Fuji, like Lake Kawaguchiko, is about a 2.5-hour bus drive from Shibuya or Shinjuku in Tokyo. Like I said before. The tour can be easily done as a day trip from Tokyo.
It will take you a full day to leave early in the morning and arrive back at the beginning of the evening.
You could also plan a night or two in the Mount Fuji area on your way from Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka!
Can you travel to Mount Fuji by yourself?
Yes, you can, but it’s not going to be easy! You can take the train and subway to Mount Fuji. There’s a train going to 5th Station and Kawaguchiko Station. But there are more sights to see around the Lake Kawaguchi area.
If you only want to visit Chureito Pagoda, Oshino Hakkai and Clock Shop Street, you can do this by train. Kawaguchiko Station is near both areas, and you can walk between them!
Public transport is not that great, and it will take you a lot of time to get around and see those areas. Therefore I really do recommend a guided tour by bus!
What is the best time to see Mount Fuji?
The best time to see Mount Fuji is in winter, around January to April. The sky is clear, and you can get amazing views of the Mountain.
I did a Mount Fuji tour in September 2023. We had some good views of the mountain, but it was only the top that could be seen. Speaking to our tour guide, she told me that we were actually very lucky.
The sky was clear, making Mount Fuji visible. However, clouds obstructed the view the day before. So, keep that in mind when planning a trip to Tokyo and taking a day tour.
Nevertheless, the tour is a great day trip, but it would be even better if you could actually see Mount Fuji!π
Mount Fuji climbing tours
It’s possible to climb Mount Fuji! Climbing season is open from around July to September, depending on the weather. The tours in this post are all scenic tours with activities around Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko.
I hope to climb Mount Fuji at some point. If that dream turns into reality, you’ll hear all about it on the blog! If you’re interested in climbing Mount Fuji, you’ll find a lot of information on the official Mount Fuji Climbing website!

The best tours to Mount Fuji
I went on two tours from Tokyo to Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi. They’re all pretty good, but picking the right one depends on what you want to do and see.
I’ll go over all the highlights per tour so you can make a proper decision!
Mt.Fuji Area, Oshino Hakkai & Kawaguchi Lake Day Trip
This guided day trip to Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko is perfect if you want to catch most of the iconic Instagrammable spots with Mount Fuji in the background!
The bus leaves from Shibuya Station and takes you to all these highlights in a full day!
The spots you’ll visit are:
- Chureito Pagoda
- Lake Kawaguchiko
- Oshino Hakkai
- Oishi Park
- Lawson Convenience Store
- Clock Shop Street
These are the most iconic sights with Mount Fuji in the background. You’ll have time to walk all the way up to Chureito Pagoda, take photos, and walk around at all stops.
I personally like this tour because you don’t linger at stops too much, and you get to see all these amazing spots at once with the possibility of taking great photos!
Mt. Fuji 5th Station & Lake Kawaguchi Bus Tour
This tour is great if you want to explore Lake Kawaguchi by yourself. It only takes you to two stops: 5th Station and Lake Kawaguchi.
You’ll have a few hours to spend by yourself around Lake Kawaguchi. The tour includes a cable car ride to a scenic viewpoint and a boat tour on Lake Kawaguchi.
When you’re done, you can also rent a bike and ride around the lake. The area has some shops and restaurants where you can stop and relax for food.
Visiting 5th Station is also very nice. If I remember correctly, it’s the highest point you can get by car at Mount Fuji. From here, all the climbing tours depart during the climbing season.
Even though you won’t be climbing Mount Fuji, it’s still a nice area to walk around and enjoy the view. There’s a shrine behind 5th Station, and don’t forget to go up the building!
This tour also included a simple lunch, which wasn’t really worth it to me. You’re better off bringing your own snacks from a convenience store!
Mt. Fuji, Hakone and Lake Ashi Cruise
This tour will take you to 5th Station, Hakone, and you’ll cruise on Lake Ashi! Hakone is a great town with amazing views of Mount Fuji. You can take the Hakone ropeway, which will give you views of the volcano at Owakudani.
Don’t forget the famous Hakone Shrine with the red tori gate floating on the water! It’s said that the spring water that is to purify your bad spirits!
At 5th Station, you can visit the Shinto Shrine and enjoy the beautiful views of Mount Fuji.
The tour includes a good buffet lunch and a visit to a Japanese garden. You will also cruise Lake Ashi, a caldera lake. After Hakone Shrine, you will take the bullet train ticket back to Tokyo, which is fantastic since you won’t have to deal with rush hour. You’ll be back in Tokyo in just 30 minutes.
This tour includes many sights unique to a Mount Fuji tour, which makes it extra fun. Because of the many sights, you’ll move fast between them!
Other tours to Mount Fuji
There are many tours to Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi! Picking the right tour depends on what you’re looking for. Please keep in mind that most of these tours are fast-paced. You will see many sights and possibly take photos.
This is just the way things are done in Asia in general, with these types of tours! If you really want to take matters into your own hands, consider renting a car or spending a night near Lake Kawaguchi or Hakone.
