These fantastic long-haul flight essentials will improve your life on board and at the airport! I’ll prepare you for your flight and ensure smooth navigation through the airport from arrival to finally getting comfortable in your seat!
As a flight attendant, I have experienced my share of long-haul flight headaches. Many of them could have been prevented with the proper preparation and organization of your must-have travel accessories!
I’ll tell you exactly what you need and why!
But before we begin this list of essentials for a long-haul flight, let me answer some questions from a flight attendant’s perspective.

What should I pack in my inflight bag for a long-haul flight?
To get organised in the best way possible, you must pack 2 bags (besides your checked-in luggage or your carry-on when travelling without check-in luggage).
First, bring a smaller backpack, tote bag, or weekend bag that you can easily stow underneath the seat in front of you. In this bag, you’ll pack all the essentials you might need during your flight.
You’ll have everything within reach and don’t need to get up to fetch something out of the luggage bin every time. Stuff you might need at the end of the flight or something you’ll only use once can be safely put inside your carry-on.
Keep your essentials backpack for things like a medicine kit, power cords, electronics, beauty essentials, entertainment, snacks, sleeping masks, etc.
Then, you’ll need a separate small cross-body bag or pouch for all your valuables. Keep this little bag on you and put your passport, iPhone, wallet, travel documents, crucial medication and cash in there. These are the items you do not want to lose because that would ruin your trip!
Everything else is replaceable and can be bought at the destination.
How do I make myself comfortable on a long-haul flight?
Getting on a long-haul flight in the economy can be uncomfortable. But there are ways to make your trip easier!

- Always bring snacks on your flight! You don’t know what’s available inflight. Bringing your snacks ensures you have something to eat or when you get hungry between meal services.
- Bring entertainment, such as a pre-downloaded book, podcast, or movie, to keep you busy. Download something you could binge-watch! Now is the perfect time!
- Dress comfortably and in layers. The temperature on an airplane is always unpredictable, so wear something loose-fitting and in layers.
- Bring a relaxing tea (if that’s your thing) like chamomile or ginger to help you relax! Don’t overdo it on the alcohol. Walk around now and then to stretch your legs.
