I completely understand the hype because I love Seoul, too! My first work trip to Seoul was in 2019, and I followed it up with a personal vacation to South Korea in 2022. Since then, I’ve travelled to Seoul multiple times, and each visit has only deepened my love for the city.

Why Seoul is Safe for Solo Female Travellers
1. Seoul has a Low Crime Rate
South Korea is known for being one of the safest countries in the world, and Seoul’s crime rate is impressively low compared to other major cities. Violent crime is rare, and petty crimes like pickpocketing are uncommon.
However, digital crimes, like hidden camera incidents (molka) and deepfake-related offences, have sparked concern in recent years. The government has taken steps to crack down on these issues, introducing stricter regulations and increasing surveillance to protect citizens and visitors.
Overall, South Korea remains an incredibly safe destination, with a strong police presence and a culture that values respect and order. If you’re planning a solo trip to Seoul, you can feel confident in your safety—just take the usual precautions.
2. Efficient and Safe Public Transport
Seoul’s public transport system is a dream for solo travellers—fast, reliable, and safe. The subway is one of the best, with clear English signage, affordable fares, and stations equipped with security cameras and emergency call buttons. Buses are also a great way to get around.
Taxis are safe and convenient, and you can use KakaoTaxi or Uber, but hailing one on the street is perfectly fine too. In most countries, women are advised to use tracked taxis, but in Seoul, it’s not something to stress over.
I’ve also never been scammed by a taxi driver in Seoul, though you might find a little late-night negotiating in Hongdae at 4 AM after a night out. Another perk? All taxis accept cards, making payments hassle-free.

3. A Culture of Respect
One of the things I love about Seoul is how respectful people are. In general, locals keep to themselves, and there’s no culture of catcalling or street harassment like in some other big cities.
Korean culture and etiquette are different from those of Western countries.
Korean society places a huge emphasis on politeness—think bowing, using two hands when giving or receiving things, and showing extra respect to elders. Even small interactions, like how store clerks carefully hand back your change, reflect this.
It makes a huge difference when you’re travelling solo because you feel safe and respected just walking around, taking the subway, or exploring new areas.

4. 24/7 Convenience Stores and Cafés
One of the best things about Seoul? The city never sleeps. Whether you’re craving a midnight snack, need a caffeine boost, or just want a cosy spot to chill, there’s always a 24-hour convenience store or café nearby.
GS25, CU, and 7-Eleven are on practically every corner with great meals, a midnight ramyeon, snacks, and even travel essentials. You can grab a quick kimbap, heat up some instant ramen, or sip on a hot coffee any time of day or night.
I’ve never felt unsafe walking alone at night on my way to still any midnight cravings!
5. Koreans respect each other’s belongings
The first time I visited Seoul, I was shocked to see locals casually leaving their phones and wallets on café tables while stepping away. Try that in most other countries, and your stuff would be gone in seconds.
Of course, things have changed a little with the increase in tourists, but overall, the city is still incredibly safe when it comes to your belongings. I tend to be extra paranoid with my valuables (I even keep my purse on me at all times when flying).
But flying with Korean Air? That was the first time I felt comfortable enough to leave my phone and wallet in the seat pocket without worry. Seoul just has that effect—it makes you feel at ease.
6. The language barrier is exaggerated
Seoul is becoming more English-friendly, but it’s still helpful to know a few basic Korean phrases. Most younger locals understand English, and all tourist spots, hotels, restaurants and public transport have English signs.
Ordering food or shopping is usually easy, thanks to picture menus and translation apps like Papago. However, outside of Seoul, English can be limited. That said, locals are generally kind, even if communication requires some creativity.
If you’re worried about language barriers, downloading a translation app and learning simple Korean phrases will make your trip smoother.
Final Verdict: Is Seoul safe for solo female travellers?
Seoul is hands down one of the safest cities for solo female travellers. With incredibly low crime rates, a super-efficient public transport system, and a culture built on respect, you can explore with confidence.
The city is well-lit and heavily monitored with CCTV, and locals generally mind their own business, making it a comfortable place to navigate alone. Even your belongings are safe—it’s common to see people leaving their phones and bags unattended in cafés.
While no place is completely risk-free, Seoul is about as close as it gets. If you take basic precautions and stay aware of your surroundings, you’ll have an amazing and stress-free experience in this lovely city!
